Scoping — see inside the safe

A 1mm fiber-optic boroscope slid through a manufacturer-engineered access point lets us see the wheel pack directly. Combine with manipulation and we open in half the time.

What scoping is

Scoping uses a flexible fiber-optic or digital boroscope — typically 1mm to 4mm in diameter — fed through a small, manufacturer-engineered access point in the safe (often a relock cap, a hidden inspection port, or a pre-existing gap in the door panel). The locksmith reads the wheel pack visually, aligning the gates directly, and opens the safe without drilling and usually without damage beyond the original access point.

When we use it

  • When manipulation alone isn\'t getting traction (worn wheel pack, Group-2M lock)
  • On safes with known boroscope access points (most modern AMSEC, Liberty, Browning, Hollon)
  • On electronic-keypad safes where the solenoid mechanism is visible
  • To verify wheel alignment before committing to a drill

When it isn\'t viable

Older safes (pre-1980 Mosler, antique floor safes) often don\'t have boroscope-friendly access points. Some TL-rated safes are explicitly designed to resist scoping. In those cases we fall back to manipulation, autodialer, or controlled drilling.

How long

Scoping is fast once the access point is opened: 15–45 minutes from scope-in to safe-open on a cooperative lock. Total job time is comparable to manipulation but with a higher success rate on stubborn locks.

What about the access point?

The access point is small — typically 4mm or smaller — and is repaired/sealed after the opening. On safes with a pre-existing inspection port, no repair is needed. The safe\'s fire rating and burglary rating are preserved.

Cost

Scoping pricing is typically $150–$320 plus our standard $150 service call.
